Für Pianoforte und Violoncell
As Johannes Brahms suggested to Hugo Becker when they played together the Sonata op. 38 in E minor, the piano "should be a partner - often a leading, often a watchful and considerate partner - but it should under no circumstances assume a purely accompanying role. The Sonata is dedicated to Josef Gänsbacher, a singing professor at the Vienna Singakademie and amateur cellist and was written between 1862 (first two movements) and 1865 (third movement). It is a sort of an homage to J. S. Bach and the principal theme of the first movement and of the fugue are based on Contrapunctus 4 and 13 of the Art of Fugue (BWV 1080).
During a summer retreat in 1886 at Hofstetten near Lake Thun in Switzerland, Brahms composed three of his best-loved chamber music masterpieces: the Cello Sonata in F major, op. 99; the radiant Violin Sonata in A major, op. 100; and the terse and passionate Piano Trio in C minor, op. 101.The Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major op. 99, with its four movements full of power, joy and lyricism, was written for, dedicated to and first performed by Robert Hausmann, great cellist and a friend of Brahms, and is one of the most loved works for cello and piano.
The fifth (and last) Sonata no. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 120 no. 2 for cello and piano was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, together with the Sonata op. 102 no. 1, between 1812 and 1815 and released in 1817 with a dedication to Countess Anna Marie Erdödy, a dear friend and confidant. An intense, mature, essential and profound Beethoven.
