A TRUE VIRTUOSO

Whoever has heard of Andrea Noferini knows that we’re talking about a true Cello Virtuoso. Born into a family of musicians, his mother a pianist and father a composer, he studied in Brussels at the school of the great violinist Arthur Grumiaux, to whom he owes all his highly violinistic virtuoso cello technique.  After graduating with the highest possible grades from the Conservatory G. Verdi in Milan in 1987 at the age of 18, he went on to study with Antonio Janigro, and attended courses of specialization with Paul Tortelier, Andre Navarra and Yo-Yo Ma.  He has been soloist with l’Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI, l’Orchestra Filarmonica of Romania and Bulgaria, Orchestra of the Teatro S. Carlo of Naples, the Orchestra of the Teatro del Opera of Rome, etc.  In addition he has given recitals at important festivals such as Ravello, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, the ”Prague Primavera” in the Czech Republic, the “Schleswig-Holstein” in Germany, etc. On Christmas Day, December 25, 2001, in Mondovisione from the “Grotto of the Nativithy” in Bethlehem, he performed J.S.Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major for Solo Cello.  He has recorded for Dynamic, Warner Bros., Bongiovanni and Tactus. In addition to performing, he teaches advanced courses of cello at the Musical Academy of Pescara, the Arts Academy of Rome and the “Laboratory of Interpretation” of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome.  For many years he has held International Courses of Orchestral Performance at the Summer Musicale Frentana and Lanciano and since 1991 has been principal cello and soloist at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome.
His chamber music activities include founding the Schubert Piano Trio and the String Trio of the Teatro dell’Opera of Rome, while he plays and records in piano duo with Bruno Canino and Franco Medori. In 1997 he received the “Virtuosity Award” for his CD ‘ The Cello Virtuoso’, in 2001 he was awarded the “Son de Cristal” for the CD ‘Cello Miniatures,’ and in 2002 the Association  “Foyer des Artistes” recognized him for artistic merit.  The CD ‘18th Century Italian Cello Sonatas’ (with Bruno Canino) has brought him international recognition of the highest level and has had record sales!  His cello is a 1759 Tomaso Balestrieri.
